Promoting Positive Behaviour Policy
Introduction:
This policy outlines our approach to behaviour management at Pitter Patter PLay We believe in nurturing happy, confident children by promoting positive reinforcement, clear expectations, and consistent support. Our policy adheres to the National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare for children up to the age of 12 years in Wales (NMS) and Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) guidelines and reflects our commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for all children and staff.
Principles:
- Positive Relationships: We build strong, positive relationships with each child based on trust, respect, and open communication. This foundation supports effective communication about expectations and consequences for non-negotiable behaviours.
- Promoting Positive Behaviour: We focus on recognising and reinforcing desirable behaviours through praise, encouragement, and positive reinforcement strategies. This cultivates self-esteem and motivates children to make positive choices.
- Developmentally Appropriate Practices: We acknowledge and respect the different stages of children’s development. Our expectations and interventions are tailored to each child’s stage, understanding, and individual needs.
- Collaboration and Partnership: We work closely with parents/carers to ensure consistency and continuity in expectations and behaviour management strategies. Regular communication and shared understanding are crucial to effectively supporting children.
- Parents are provided with our policies as part of the registration process and asked to sign a partnership agreement as part of our commitment to partnership working with parents and carers
- Safety and Well-being: Ensuring the safety and well-being of all children and staff is paramount. We have clear procedures for managing challenging behaviour that prioritizes de-escalation and minimizes risk while upholding everyone’s dignity and respect.
Strategies:
- Clear Expectations: We clearly communicate age/stage-appropriate rules and expectations with children through visual aids, simple language, and routine interaction. We actively remind and guide children in applying these expectations throughout the day.
- Redirection and Positive Alternatives: When children engage in challenging behaviour, we prioritise redirection. We offer them positive alternatives or engage them in different activities to help them manage their emotions and make appropriate choices.
- Natural Consequences: We utilise natural consequences to help children learn from their actions. For example, deliberately spilling water might involve cleaning it up together.
- Calm time: In case of persistent challenging behaviour, a designated calm space can be offered for children to self-regulate. This is never used as punishment or isolation.
- Communication and Reflection: We discuss incidents with children afterwards, helping them understand the impact of their behaviour and offering solutions for future situations. We involve parents/carers in these discussions, ensuring consistency and open communication.
- Professional Development: We invest in ongoing training and development for our staff on best practices in positive behaviour management and supporting children with challenging behaviours.
Prohibited Practices:
- Physical punishment, such as smacking or shouting, is strictly prohibited.
- Humiliation, isolation, or threats are never used as disciplinary measures.
- Labelling children with negative terms is avoided.
- We respect diversity and cultural differences in communication and behaviour patterns.
Monitoring and Review:
This policy will be regularly reviewed and updated to reflect best practices and ensure its effectiveness in promoting positive behaviour in our nursery. Parents/carers will be informed of any changes.
Working Together:
We believe that by working together with parents/carers and focusing on positive relationships, clear expectations, and effective intervention strategies, we can create a safe and nurturing environment where all children can thrive.
Additional Notes:
- This policy will be supplemented by specific procedures for managing challenging behaviours, adhering to the NMS guidance and relevant legislation.
- Staff training on positive behaviour management is essential for consistent implementation and we are committed to continuing our professional development and practice
- Open communication and collaboration with parents/carers are crucial for supporting children effectively.
