Our policy adheres to the National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare for children up to the age of 12 years in Wales (NMS) and Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) guidelines and reflects our commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for all children and staff.<\/p>\n<p>Principles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Positive Relationships:\u00a0We build strong,\u00a0positive relationships with each child based on trust,\u00a0respect,\u00a0and open communication.\u00a0This foundation supports effective communication about expectations and consequences for non-negotiable behaviours.<\/li>\n<li>Promoting Positive Behaviour:\u00a0We focus on recognising and reinforcing desirable behaviours through praise,\u00a0encouragement,\u00a0and positive reinforcement strategies.\u00a0This cultivates self-esteem and motivates children to make positive choices.<\/li>\n<li>Developmentally Appropriate Practices:\u00a0We acknowledge and respect the different stages of children&#8217;s development.\u00a0Our expectations and interventions are tailored to each child&#8217;s stage,\u00a0understanding,\u00a0and individual needs.<\/li>\n<li>Collaboration and Partnership:\u00a0We work closely with parents\/carers to ensure consistency and continuity in expectations and behaviour management strategies.\u00a0Regular communication and shared understanding are crucial to effectively supporting children.<\/li>\n<li>Parents are provided with our policies as part of the registration process and asked to sign a partnership agreement as part of our commitment to partnership working with parents and carers<\/li>\n<li>Safety and Well-being:\u00a0Ensuring the safety and well-being of all children and staff is paramount.\u00a0We have clear procedures for managing challenging behaviour that prioritizes de-escalation and minimizes risk while upholding everyone&#8217;s dignity and respect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Strategies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clear Expectations:\u00a0We clearly communicate age\/stage-appropriate rules and expectations with children through visual aids,\u00a0simple language,\u00a0and routine interaction.\u00a0We actively remind and guide children in applying these expectations throughout the day.<\/li>\n<li>Redirection and Positive Alternatives:\u00a0When children engage in challenging behaviour,\u00a0we prioritise redirection.\u00a0We offer them positive alternatives or engage them in different activities to help them manage their emotions and make appropriate choices.<\/li>\n<li>Natural Consequences:\u00a0We utilise natural consequences to help children learn from their actions.\u00a0For example,\u00a0deliberately spilling water might involve cleaning it up together.<\/li>\n<li>Calm time:\u00a0In case of persistent challenging behaviour,\u00a0a designated calm space can be offered for children to self-regulate.\u00a0This is never used as punishment or isolation.<\/li>\n<li>Communication and Reflection:\u00a0We discuss incidents with children afterwards,\u00a0helping them understand the impact of their behaviour and offering solutions for future situations.\u00a0We involve parents\/carers in these discussions,\u00a0ensuring consistency and open communication.<\/li>\n<li>Professional Development:\u00a0We invest in ongoing training and development for our staff on best practices in positive behaviour management and supporting children with challenging behaviours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Prohibited Practices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical punishment,\u00a0such as smacking or shouting,\u00a0is strictly prohibited.<\/li>\n<li>Humiliation,\u00a0isolation,\u00a0or threats are never used as disciplinary measures.<\/li>\n<li>Labelling children with negative terms is avoided.<\/li>\n<li>We respect diversity and cultural differences in communication and behaviour patterns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Monitoring and Review:<\/p>\n<p>This policy will be regularly reviewed and updated to reflect best practices and ensure its effectiveness in promoting positive behaviour in our nursery.
